There are several things to keep in mind when looking for a home. First, pictures online are great, but do not always tell the whole story. Sometimes a house may look cluttered or dirty or old and worn out, when in reality there is nothing wrong with the it. When touring a property always keep in mind cleaning and paint can make a world of difference and are easy to do. God made us all different, so we all have different tastes and styles. Look past dated décor and try to see the real potential in the house. Some people are better at this than others. Is the home livable the way it is now? What needs to be done or changed immediately? What can I change over time? What will my stuff look like in this house? These are good questions to ask yourself when looking at homes. For example, the house me and my husband bought a couple years ago was not technically our dream house. There was dark brown carpet in some areas, blue carpet in one room, white linoleum floors in other rooms, the cabinets show a little wear and tear, etc. Buying a property is a big decision and cost a lot of money, so you want to be picky but be careful not to be too picky. We were able to look past the floors and wear and tear and other things we didn’t love, because we were able to see the potential. We have since painted the walls, changed all the floors, added our own décor, and the house already seems like a totally different place. We still have more work we want to do in the future, but the house was completely functional when we moved in and it has been fun to make our own decisions on things we want to change. The perfect home does not exist, unless you are building your own. Unfortunately we all have to make compromises, so when looking, decide what you can and can’t live with and what will be easy or hard to change over time.
